What is a palimpsest?
In times gone by, parchment was too precious to toss in the circular file as we do our writing paper today. Sheepskin is, after all, quite durable. Many manuscripts which made it to modern times show that beneath the writing, there are faint images of previous text which has been scraped away.

We like the sense of mystery, mystery being a hallmark of the spiritual path, and we liked the idea of there being layers of meaning to explore each time we return to something we thought we already knew.

The Joy of Rediscovering Spirit

The last issue of Palimpsest urged us all to embrace our earthly existence and physical being, recognizing the glorious, if sometimes quirky and painful, life that we took on when we entered the world.  Such an admonishment is only necessary because we humans seem to make wild dualistic swings back and forth between the old “spirit is good and body is bad” extremes.

Now that we’ve made one pass back at center through accepting the sacredness of all – including the physical – we can turn over the same puzzle again, this time from a different perspective.  Here it is: we worked so hard at becoming physical that we forgot how to be spirits!

I never quite grasped the concept of ego until I heard it explained this way: our ego is the part of us which is responsible for enforcing the rules of physical existence, so that we can successfully function in the physical.

What does that mean?  One example might be the most frequent objection to the idea that our world and our lives are our own creation and choice.  Why would anyone choose tragedy and suffering?  While I do not claim to understand all things from this side of “the veil,” over the years I have come to believe that we are not and never have been victims.  Would we put ourselves through the difficult times if we did not have an ego telling us “this is all there is, give it your best shot?”  Probably not.

The ego is a perfectly good tool in our mental toolbox, but it has gotten a little carried away.  Instead of simply keeping us strongly focused on getting through physical life, it has become a sort of mental Archie Bunker.  Just think, how many of your friends, family and coworkers feel free to discuss with you such topics as psychic ability, conscious creation, shamanism, and so forth?  Most will try to persuade you such things do not exist, right?

Does this make the ego a villain?  Not at all.  I, for one, need both feet on the ground and my physical wits about me when I pull out of the driveway to go to work in the mornings.  But I have gone through my whole life feeling there was something more, if I could just remember what it was.  These days, I’m remembering a lot, and I’ve reassured my stubborn ego that all will be fine if it will let me recover my forgotten abilities, like out-of-body travel, spiritual healing and intuitive knowledge.

So next time you feel either your physical or your spirit self swinging wildly to one extreme, just smile and wave as you pass through.  Reassure each part of yourself that you know it’s there, and you’re working on a better relationship.  And hold on for the ride!
