What is a palimpsest?
In times gone by, parchment was too precious to toss in the circular file as we do our writing paper today. Sheepskin is, after all, quite durable. Many manuscripts which made it to modern times show that beneath the writing, there are faint images of previous text which has been scraped away.

We like the sense of mystery, mystery being a hallmark of the spiritual path, and we liked the idea of there being layers of meaning to explore each time we return to something we thought we already knew.

Be Young, Be Foolish, But Be Happy

We've an unusual Beltane request this year: as a memorial to a friend passed-over, drum his favorite Tams song into the festivities.

With one foot squarely planted in middle age and the other complaining arthritically about the pointe shoe into which it was forced four times a week in my youth, I have often pondered my young and foolish years.
What was I thinking when I married young, left town and tried to raise goats, babies and yellow squash all at once? What, indeed, possessed me to flee one day to a new life in a new city? And what folly led me to desert stable employment and start my own business a few years ago?

Like Guinevere, we go a-Maying once a year to usher in "that lovely month when everyone goes blissfully astray," falling backwards in time to the age when we were excused for being foolish and happy at the same time. At Beltane we pretend for a few hours that we never learned the rules, whilst we exult in the breaking of those selfsame social prohibitions against frolic, flirting and - well, you know.

Tarot's Fool is famously garbed in floral and carries few burdens as he sets out to find himself. Anyone can see that a great fall will be his first life experience since he is stepping into midair at the edge of a cliff. But he must be destined to survive the fall and go on to a long and adventurous life, for we know the Fool is only the first card of many, each representing an archetypal life experience.

Like the Fool, I started out with little - little in my knapsack, and still less common sense. For a long time I nursed my wounds and fretted over the scars. But somehow I recovered from several tumbles down the cliff, discovered new vistas and friends, and finally found true happiness.

We ate the squash, and eventually the goats, too. The babies have grown up and are producing their own crops of little ones nowadays. And that new business has somehow supported me for several years now, acquiring a good reputation to boot. In short, I found out that I really could start over again, as often as I want or need to. I learned that each day is a new chance, each breath my next creation.

This MayDay remember your youth. Speak to every cell in your body of your hedonistic love and wishes for their well-being and pleasure. Eat well, breathe in the spring air, and for goddess' sake, have sex with someone, somewhere (it counts if you have it with yourself, as long as you call in the morning). Kiss people you hardly know and eat the damn chocolate!

Monday will get here soon enough, so be young, foolish and deliciously happy. You can return to playing it safe after the Beltane fires have gone cold. Or you might just write a new verse to some old songs. And now a toast - The Lusty Month of May!
